Asian Food Primer: Mongolian Food

Nomadic horsemen of Central Asia, Mongolians learned to live off their animal herds. Meat dominates their diet and traditionally only vegetables that could survive such a cold climate were grown. Today, Mongolians are mostly settled.

Common ingredients:

Assortment of Cheeses

meat, especially lamb, cheese, milk, and yogurt. Breads, and some vegetables, especially potato, cabbage, and onions

Popular dishes:

lamb in spices with rice and chutney; everyone, including children, drinks hot tea with butter and roasted barley added
